Understanding Bitcoin Units
Bitcoin is divisible to eight decimal places, allowing for extremely precise transactions. As Bitcoin's price has grown, smaller units have become more practical for everyday use. Here are the four main units you'll encounter:
BTC (Bitcoin)
The base unit. 1 BTC is the whole coin. With prices in the tens of thousands of dollars, most people own fractions of a BTC rather than whole coins.
1 BTC = 1.00000000 BTC
mBTC (Millibitcoin)
One thousandth of a Bitcoin. Useful for pricing mid-range items and services. Sometimes called a "millibit."
1 mBTC = 0.001 BTC = 100,000 sat
µBTC / bits (Microbitcoin)
One millionth of a Bitcoin, also called a "bit." Popular for tipping and micropayments. Each bit equals 100 satoshis.
1 µBTC = 0.000001 BTC = 100 sat
Satoshi (sat)
The smallest unit of Bitcoin, named after its creator Satoshi Nakamoto. One hundred millionth of a Bitcoin. Increasingly used as the standard denomination on the Lightning Network.
1 sat = 0.00000001 BTC
What Is a Satoshi?
A satoshi (sat) is the smallest unit of Bitcoin, representing one hundred millionth of a single BTC (0.00000001 BTC). Named after Bitcoin's pseudonymous creator, Satoshi Nakamoto, this tiny unit has become increasingly important as Bitcoin's value has grown.
When Bitcoin traded at a few cents, there was little need for such small denominations. But with BTC priced in the tens of thousands of dollars, satoshis have become the practical unit for everyday transactions. Buying a coffee? That might be 5,000 sats. A monthly subscription? Perhaps 50,000 sats. The Lightning Network, Bitcoin's layer-2 scaling solution, operates natively in satoshis.
Did you know?
There are 2.1 quadrillion (2,100,000,000,000,000) total satoshis that can ever exist. That's enough for every person on Earth to own about 262,500 satoshis — even if no Bitcoin were ever lost.
For miners, thinking in satoshis is second nature. Mining rewards, pool payouts, and transaction fees are all commonly expressed in satoshis. When you rent a mining machine on NoxHash, your daily earnings are credited in BTC but are often most meaningful when viewed in satoshis — especially for smaller mining operations.
